From the EastBrethren, another exciting year is ahead of us. A lot was accomplished last year. Worshipful John Scofield, P.M. left large shoes to fill. Successful efforts for the canned goods drive will continue. The summer backpack drive, fall winter coat drive and our Thanksgiving turkey drive will also continue with our increasing enthusiasm to support our community. On January 8th following the Stated Meeting Dinner our solemn Roll Call Ceremony will pay tribute to those Brothers who have passed away since our last Roll Call. Thank you for having the confidence in me by electing me as your Senior Warden for the ensuing Masonic year. Morris and Bro. Scott M. Robinson to the fraternity! They were initiated an Entered Apprentice Mason in December 2013. What a great way to start a new Masonic year! Year 2014 has just started and is looking like a busy schedule ahead. We have a total of 5 candidates/applicants for degrees. Some of them are waiting to be balloted on, others have gone through the first step of the Masonic journey, the Entered Apprentice degree. We have several Brothers that are working hard on getting ready to take their proficiencies. Let us continue to keep ourselves dedicated to the teachings of Masonry and be role models for our new candidates to be better men. The Grand Lodge of the State of California has recently rolled out a new feature on the Grand Lodges website, "The Candidate Learning Center". It is open to any Mason in Good Standing, from the youngest Entered Apprentice Mason in the Northeast corner to the Worshipful Master in the East. This is a valuable resource for coaches, but it is something that we can all learn from and use. Please log in and check it out. Also we have a great new website www.hardingsanjuan.com. Degree proficiencies are so important, regrettably, not all Mater Masons take the time to learn the Third Degree Proficiency because it is not required to enjoy the benefits and privileges of the lodge and fraternity. It is required, of course to qualify as Senior Deacon. Too often, unless one is contemplating ascension to the Master’s chair, the Third Degree proficiency is an untapped resource of knowledge reinforcement. As the Senior Warden, I am charged with the duty of governing the education and learning of the candidates during their progress in the degree work. I would ask the brethren to regard the Third Degree proficiency as a duty and not just an option. Each proficiency bears purpose, which includes reinforcement of the candidate’s understanding of the principles to which he has committed himself. As Master Masons we should ask ourselves what can we do to reinforce these important lessons. I look forward to an exciting year ahead. We have many things in the planning and we can’t wait to share them with you all. Our food closet is always in need of additional donations. Please remember to bring items every time you visit the lodge. This is such a great program that we have going here, that it should be shared with your friends and family. Besides keeping the lights on the new 2014 Hall Board Directors will come up with some ideas to improve the Lodge building. However, they need input from the members of the Lodge as to ways to make our building more suitable. If any members have concerns, please make them known to the Directors. The improvement of our external lighting is still on the agenda. The biggest issue is the cost to put in lighting that would enhance the aesthetics of the parking lot area. We may have to go piecemeal and spread the improvement over several years. In reflection, I want to thank the Lodge members that volunteered in 2013 to get things done and hold down the cost of maintaining the property. This is the reason we ended up on December 31 in the Black. With your continuing help we hope to find a Sunday renter. I am sure there is a small church somewhere in our area that, if they knew of our facility, would like to join us. Fraternally, Don Bagley, P.M., President FuneralsYou might not know that the California Masonic Code Section 804.855 says: “It is the duty of every member to attend the funeral of a deceased member of his Lodge or any other Master Mason residing within the vicinity of his Lodge at the time of death, if he can do so without great inconvenience.” When a Masonic Funeral or Memorial Service is requested, we will send you an email or a recorded telephone message. Even if you did not know the departed Brother, a respectable attendance of Masonic Brothers really means a lot to the deceased member’s family.
